I am not a Doctor! I am a Realtor!
In this past year I wasted some money on coaching. I will not say all coaching is bad, but the coach I worked with was. I will not mention his name, let's just leave that underground for now.
One of the big pitches was is to act like a Doctor and limit access to myself. To only make myself available so many hours a day for phone calls. In fact there was one coaching session where he talked about letting people wait for you in the office before going out to meet with them, to kind of show them who is boss.
Well I am not that kind of person and I am not a doctor. I understand about time management. I also understand when I have to wait at the doctor. The doctors day can be filled with many unexpected problems, some of them very serious. In general if I go in with an appointment the doctors are very prompt about seeing me and my waits are short. When I have gone in and it was an emergency that needed immediate attention we have gotten it (someone else may have had to wait).
I am a Realtor. That means I am a service provider. I look forward to the opportunity to work with people. My success is based on providing service to people and answering the clients questions. I have had a few people with boundary issues; calling at all hours when it could have waited, but very few. Most people understand and work with me and I work with them. I show them houses and meet with them on their schedule. When they have questions I get back to them with the answer.
Do I try and screen people to determine if they are ready to see homes? Yes I do. Sometimes people have not done the ground work with getting the loan; other people are not committed to me as an agent. There are people who do not understand the value of an agent and will try working with several agents to see who will get them the best deal. We all have access to the same list of properties, what they need to do is find the agent they can trust to work hard for them.
Before I was in Real Estate I worked with the public as an insurance adjuster. Frequently I found myself waiting on reports, approval, and other things before I could give people answers on their claims. What I found was most people just wanted to know what was going on. I would tell people I would call them by a particular day, even if I had nothing to tell them just to let them know I was working on the problem. I found this works in Real Estate too. I cannot do everything at once but I can give people a time frame that I can and will accomplish a task and if there is a delay let them know in advance and why.
