Last night I rented and watched the latest version of True Grit. Many young people did not realize that Latest Version of True Grit was not the first film version of True Grit both are based on the book True Grit by Charles Portis.
When I first heard they were going to remake True Grit I was a little upset. The first version with John Wayne is such a great movie, but then I began to hear good things about the new version, so first I read the book and then I rented the new version when it came out.
First off I am now calling it the "New Version" rather than a remake. True Grit is a classic American Novel with classic Characters. Truly a great book. The New Version is simply a reinterpretation of the original novel. How many different presentations of Romeo of Juliet have we been through - we don't call them remakes.
Having read the book and now having seen both movies I want to make the following observations:
- Both movies stray from the book in different ways. Both also bring out elements of the book that the other did not.
- I found the dialog in the newer version closer to the book and snappier. The dialog is what makes the book and the movie.
- The newer version moves quicker and leaves out some stuff. I felt that was done because the modern audience needs a faster pace of story telling - but they lost something.
- The Villians Tom Cheney and Lucky Ned Pepper were better fleshed out in the first movie version - probably because they were given more screen time. The actors were just as good (for the villians) in both versions. I might have liked the Tom Cheney in the newer version a little better. Ned's gang certainly had more character in the original version.
- John Wayne is my favorite actor of all time - he won his only Academy Award for playing Rooster Cogburn. But I will say Jeff Bridges played the role better - probably because of the dialog given him and the fact I could let him be Rooster and not view him through the prism of other westerns.
- Matt Damon was far better at La Boeuf than Glen Campbell. Damon had a far gritter portrayal - he looked a little rougher around the edges. As a side note Glen Campbell was from the same area of Arkansas as Charles Portis (The action takes place in Arkansas and Oklahoma) and also played an Arkansas based character in another Portis book turned into a movie - Norwood.
Although there was no romance of nothing inappropriate between La Boeuf and the 14 year old Mattie I do think they put a hair of sexual tension in a few scenes where you thought Mattie might be falling for him. The initial meeting between La Boeuf and Mattie was the low point of the movie for me. I did not find it socially realistic for the time and more out of a modern spy drama.
Over all both movies need to be seen and the book read to really apperciate all 3 fully. I have really enjoyed the read and both movies.
