Here is some great advise for anyone living in California or Earthquake Country. Big ones don't come often but when they come we need to be ready.
In the event of a major earthquake (in this area of Northern California it is just a 'matter of time'), it may be necessary to shut off the gas line to your home at the gas meter.
Everyone in the family should know how to shut off the gas service.
Make sure every member knows where the gas meter is. It is also a good idea to leave directions on the location of the gas meter in an obvious location (like the refrigerator) if you will be gone and a relative or neighbor will be 'watching' the house.
Do not block access to the meter with shrubs or plants, make sure it is easy to locate. Paint the 'shut off valve' a bright color and attach a wrench to the meter to use to shut off the gas flow in case of an emergency. Being able to shut the gas service off quickly may save your home.
In the event you do shut off the gas flow, contact the local gas company if you are unsure of how to relight the pilots. Some pilots are auto start but not ALL! Do not take any chances.
