Living in Contra Costa County: Are you Buying a House or a Home?

Are you Buying a House or a Home?

Are you Buying a House or a Home?

What is the difference between a house and a home?

Well a house is a structure, you can evaluate it by Square Footage, Construction type, layout, lot size, location, up grades, amenities, cost, cost per SF, potential resale value, and many other factors.

But a home is a place you live in; a home is the center of you and your families life. A Buying a Househome has a certain feel to it that matches how you live. The home is the center of your involvement in your outside community.

The evaluation of a house is a more cold blooded than looking for a home. An evaluation of a house is about facts and figures. An Evaluation of a home is about you.

Buying a HomePerhaps that odd room does not figure in good for a house, but maybe it makes and excellent sewing room, retreat, or hang out for your kids in your home. That house may be a little close to the freeway; but maybe for you that home takes a lot of time of your commute and the noise is not an issue. Perhaps that house most people see as on an odd shaped lot you see as a home with an excellent landscaping or garden opportunity.

When shopping you will always be comparing houses and you want to do that to make sure it is a wise financial purchase. But if you are looking for a place to live it is more than an investment; it is about home. Perhaps the wise financial decision in buying a house is not the wisest decision about when picking out a home. Perhaps the house is in an area that you think will appreciate faster; but is the home where you want to live? Is the home within walking distance of your kids school?
Be wise when buying a house, but think about how it will work as your Home.

Thank you Hannah.  I think the distinction between a house and a home is very important.

Gene - Great description on the difference between a house and a home.

Great point, Gene, on the difference between a house and a home. On the distaff side, I often counsel my sellers to stop thinking of their home as such once we list and start detaching by thinking of it as a house they are selling.
